Set in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, the film is narrated by 18-year-old Caine (Tyrin Turner), a drug dealer and car thief who lives with his religious grandparents. After graduating from high school, Caine shows no ambition beyond hanging out with his friends, so his grandparents kick him out. Among his other troubles are his best friend O-Dog (Larenz Tate), a vicious thug hunted by the police, and the friends and family of the girl Caine got pregnant and then turned his back on. Perhaps the lone positive influence in his sphere is Ronnie (Jada Pinkett), a single parent struggling to raise her young son without the boy falling prey to the 'hood mentality. When their friendship becomes a love affair, Ronnie tries desperately to convince Caine to move with her to Atlanta; soon afterward, he is shot and nearly dies. After recovering, he accepts Ronnie's offer, but tragedy strikes as they pack their van in preparation to leave.

Black Presentation!

YOU GOT SERVED

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkBe80SajCg

MEDIA LANGUAGE:

The costumes chosen for this particular movie are stereotypically representative of black people; loose jeans, tracksuit bottoms worn low, large t-shirts, baseball caps and Avirex style jackets.

Above: This would be considered as hip hop style attire.

INSTITUTION: The director and writer of this production is black and this is significant because the film is based on a black community as the majority of the dance crew is black.

GENRE: HIP HOP/ RAP MUSIC/ BREAKDANCE

This is important because the majority of hip hop artists are black such as Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, 50 Cent etc.

REPRESENTATION:

REPRESENTS BLACK PEOPLE IN URBAN COMMUNITY
The way the people in the film are represented are very stereotypical. Gun crime, drug dealing, hustling etc. are all becoming a stereotypical association to black people and this can be seen in You Got Served as the little kid got shot whilst playing on the block.

AUDIENCE: The audience for a film like this would be 12+, generally teenagers who are influenced by this kind of culture (drugs, dancing, clothing).

IDEOLOGY: CRIME (A stereotypical representation of black people); guns, drugs MONEY; hustling, dancing etc. The ideology of both of these is street life, black culture and urban lifestlye.

NARRATIVE:

At Mr. Rad's Warehouse, the best hip-hop crews in Los Angeles compete for money and respect. But when a suburban crew crashes the party, stealing their dancers-and their moves-two warring friends have to pull together to represent the street. Combining a sexy story and the best dance moves to hit the screen, YOU GOT SERVED is a fast-moving urban drama with a hip-hop heart of steel.
